Watched this in no small part due to the knowledge that somewhere in the 1100;s my family was norman lords. Learning that I may or may not be related to Vikings is pretty damned cool as well as the rest of the story of my norman heritage. Thanks Y'all for the interesting breaakdown of what might be my very family history, and learning how awesome it is with one of my other favorite youtubers. Though I think I've gotta say, (even if I'm half a year late), if you want to get a hold of viking history, maybe reach out to Skallagrim. Shad is amazing and great for medieval, but if I remember correctly, Skall is the Viking of the ancient weapon trio. Shad being English/French/Main European, and Metatron being the Japanese(Samurai) channels.

Being 75% scandinavian, and possibly even having Norman ancestry, this is relevant to my interests.

Assimilating cultures works really well… sometimes.

Generally, cultural similarities (like all being Italian and living similar lives except with different religions) means assimilation = good. Problems come up when you have, let's say, Europeans and Native americans. They have nothing in common and all attempts to assimilate are really just cause for one side to be fucked over. Neither side wants to assimilate because theres no common group to assimilate towards which causes a whole buncha issues.

Another take on the same events could be that mass migration is problematic. If Europeans would have migrated slowly to the Americas, they may have assimilated more effectively… or not… who knows. But in any case, the theory here is slower migration is less forceful and more effective. .

The Normans actually did not speak French because they spoke Norman. France did not start speaking French until the Age of Absoluteism and it wasn't until after WW1 that the many minority languages of France began to properly die out (quite literally)

Normans were not Vikings anymore , that’s bullshit. They had Viking ancestry obviously , but their Viking ancestors heavily intermarried with the local Gallo-Roman-Frankish population of northern France, they spoke French , denying their Frenchness is silly. I think that false idea was invented by the English , who hated the notion of having been conquered by Frenchmen… the idea of being conquered by Vikings seems more palatable to them.

My Grandfather’s family came over to England with William the Conqueror (the name is on the battle abbey rolls) and the patriarch at that time might have been a cousin/brother/nephew? (Some relation) of William. We know all this because some guy in 1899 wrote a book on the ancestry of his family (a side of our own family).

Boy. Your personal politics don't dictate what is and isn't important historically. Like it or not A LOT of history has been shaped by dynastic struggle. You don't get to gloss over it because it offends your modern sensibilities.

It’s not really correct to simply call the normans Vikings (mostly because the vikings were not an actual people) but also because they had really mixed into French culture at this point, and were a blend between the two rather than just ‘vikings’

Ah the story of the good old Billy the Bastard became king. BTW "assimilating" is the key word, not creating a self segregated ghettos that looks like threatened hedgehog every time outsider approaches it and that is it is modern to do in EU currently.
