Water Discovered On Exoplanet | AltaX Drone | 777X Fail | Aviation Podcast S1 E2 | AeroSpaceNews.com


Hello and thank you for joining me once again
on the LeadingEdge. I’m Craig, your host, the editor of AeroSpaceNews.com,
a pilot, aerial photographer and filmmaker. A reminder for those of you with us on YouTube,
this is primarily an audio podcast so there may not be video to watch other than the animated
waveform. However, as a reward to those of you that
do watch I occasionally toss in some fun photo and video surprises so keep an eye out for
easter eggs. And now, here is what’s happening in the
known universe… Up first in space news… By now you may have heard the announcement
from NASA that water vapor has been detected on an exoplanet, that is, a planet that orbits
a star other than our sun. In other words, a planet outside our solar
system. Using data from the Hubble Space Telescope
archives and other past observations, NASA said that Astronomers at the Center for Space
Exochemistry Data at the University College London in the United Kingdom made the discovery
in catchy-named K2-18b, an exoplanet which orbits a small red dwarf star about 110 light-years
away in the constellation Leo. The exciting part of this news is that K2-18b
lies in what is considered to be the “habitable zone,” the location around any star in which
liquid water could potentially exist in a manner that could support life as we know
it. It is unknown if K2-18b is a rocky world or
a gas body. Its star is also likely to be a terrible neighbor
in that the models suggest there will be levels of high-energy radiation streaming toward
K2-18b that would be hostile to life. K2-18b was originally discovered by NASA’s
Kepler Space Telescope in 2015. A so-called super earth, it has a mass eight
times greater than our planet and as a result the surface gravity would be much higher than
our home world. The Indian Space Research Organization or
ISRO announced on 9 September that they have located the Vikram Lander launched from Chandrayaan
2 in orbit around the moon but are yet to make contact. To recap, ISRO lost contact with Vikram Lander
during the final moments of descent to the surface of the moon at what appeared to be
rather high velocity. A consensus of the experts I’ve followed
seems to be the vehicle crashed but no images have been released by ISRO of the touchdown
site. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will
likely get a look in the coming days but the distance and angle of view could limit the
quality of the results. In drone news Freefly Systems unveiled their
new professional, rugged, and modular AltaX. Aimed largely at aerial filmmakers, the new
platform features some very unique rotor engineering that we will take a closer look at in a future
episode. Turning to airline news, Boeing seems to have
suffered yet another setback. A non-flying test article of the Boeing 777X
was undergoing a high pressure test at the Boeing Everett plant when a cargo door failed. To be clear, this was a test, prior to first
flight, which is already delayed for engine-related issues, involving closing up a non-flying
test fuselage and testing all the doors, ports and integrity of the airframe as the aircraft
has air pumped in like blowing up a balloon. Failures like this have happened in the industry
before and this is the place where you’d want them to happen. However, unlike wings and tail surfaces, which
more commonly are tested to failure, it is unusual for a door failure and does not reflect
well on Boeing at a time where their reputation is suffering. Unrelated, but also involving Boeing, the
publication Defense News broke a story that said the US Air Force has indefinitely restricted
the very troubled KC-46 tanker from carrying cargo and passengers because of problems with
the unique-to-the-KC-46 cargo restraints unlocking putting occupants and the aircraft in jeopardy. Ask any pilot, especially those that haul
freight, you don’t want cargo shifting in flight. Planes crash and people get killed. In other aviation news the Reno Air Races
are underway at Stead Airport. If you’ve not seen them you are missing
an incredible event and spectacle. I covered them one year for Flight International
including out on a pylon. There has been an incident this year involving
a mid-air collision between Kraken and Last Lap Player. Thankfully no injuries were reported and both
planes made it back to the runway. Turning finally to news nuggets… The BBC is reporting that in February, an
Airbus A330 with 337 people aboard, flying from Germany to Mexico, was forced to divert
to Ireland. Apparently, the captain’s coffee spilled
on the center console causing enough damage that there was smoke in the cockpit, crew
oxygen masks were used, and some radios failed. According to the BBC the Flight Safety Foundation
has said the airline was Condor but operated by Thomas Cook. There were no injuries but going forward beverages
will be served by this operator with lids. Wrapping up I wanted to share some good work
I’ve enjoyed by other folks. Dr. Derek Muller better known as Veritasium,
