The really ironic thing is that St. Vincent's MUSIC VIDEOS can be fucking terrifying and hilarious at the same time, which is what "The Birthday Party" DIDN't pull off. Even the implied events in her lyrics are more compelling fodder for horror than this actual plot. TBH I think she was just fucking around with some drugs when she "made" it. She's more or less buried it in her past, never mentions it….

In the first story, they should have had the on Christmas have her leg all visibly bitten up ,but as a twist make it so she is like the baker family in resy 7. By that I mean she is unfazed and the rest of the family also act like the baker family but without the little evil kid.

To be fair, in The Birthday Party, she obviously doesnt want the kid to grow up associating the time of her birthday with her fathers suicide. Besides that, its probably thing the film wants us to use our suspension of disbelief with in order to have a sense of mundane macabre. The "jump scares" are so trite because the movie is trying to work off our sense of underlying unease and disturbed feelings about how the mother is treating her husbands suicide. The mundane macabre sense of unease is a direct contrast to jump scares, so i guess the director wants us to see the absurdity in them? Is it a good film? Idk havent watched it, but itis trying for something, and that is indeed something, to its credit.

As a fan of St. Vincent, I am sad to see her foray into directing/writing was unsuccessful. I'll just stick to her tunes

The Box is obviously a horror story for breatharians as it contradicts their world view. While St. Vincent is a musical genius it doesn’t mean she should make horror movies especially is she doesn’t like the genre.

After making the mistake of reading some of the comments, I think someone should make a horror movie about SJWs. From what I'm reading there is a large portion of the population that checks under their bed at night to make sure there aren't any of them hiding there and waiting to suck their blood. Get on this Pureflix

Doesn't sound like a good movie. I have three recommendations instead.
Check out this book that freaked me out or out right disturbed me as a teenage girl, Women of Darkness edited by by Kathryn Ptacek. If there are other cool anthology books to read, they will also be worth it.
Three Extremes and Three Extremes 2 are also good horror movies that jarred and they can be disturbing. Excellent Asian horror and suspense camera work and some odd stories. Gross in parts but I found it worth watching.

Yeah, it really is odd to point out the "lack of opportunities/representation/respect" for women in the horror genre specifically. Not only due to the fact that so many starring roles are given to women in horror films, but also because I can name 3 incredibly notable and amazing horror movies directed by women. The Babadook, American Psycho and the original Pet Semetary are all movies directed by women that have received alot of acclaim from people. And hell, in the wider scope of horror, women have arguably had a damn important impact on the genre on a foundational level and it didn't stop at just with Mary Shelley. Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" was adapted from a book by a woman and The Haunting of Hill House is arguably up there with Frankenstein in terms of signifigance to the genre, pioneering alot of how we perceive and write psychological horror. If such accomplishments fall on deaf ears to the public, that is a failure of people spreading awareness of these things and XX painting itself exceptional by being "Horror movies by women" does nothing but bury the already-existing brilliance being performed by women in this industry. Now, that obviously doesn't account for the opportunities being given to women, as I am not in the industry, but it's something worth pointing out regardless, because I am surprised with how people generally don't know exactly how much quality horror is being produced by women.

If anything, I think the genre, where a woman's perspective might be most unrepresented is in the action genre. I don't know too many action movies that were directed by women and I can imagine the difference in perspective between how the genre would be approached would be interesting to see. Even for starring roles, action movies lack outstanding roles for women, usually used for either of the 2 extremes of being insulting eye candy or painfully "strong, independent woman" with only like Sarah Connor and The Bride being the 2 standout exceptions in my head. I dunno, my eye would certainly be more caught by a woman directing a big action movie than one directing a horror movie would.

Honestly how I think the Box could've been fixed.

After the father is told the secret and also stops eating the mother then goes looking for the man to no prevail; but would end up finding out what the box does somehow. Though we never get to see, keeping that ominous allure in a good way instead of constant confusion. And then eventually we see her feuding with her family and seemingly fighting them off, hinting at what the box does but once again, never explicitly stating it; only for it to end in one of those cop out getaway moments, the next shot being the family eating her for dinner. And then maybe end with a pan shot of the box ominously sitting in the background as they feast on her, AAAAnd, cut to black.

This would actually give the audience a chance to learn what it does while not being too on the nose; as it's power could be that yes it stops their hunger for conventional food, yet instead gives them a craving for human flesh. And BAM, not perfect, but would've been a way better resolve.

I feel like you were looking for a typical non deep horror movie and this is like some metaphorical horror on a student budget. With the horror being in the message and not what's literally shown. Hence why you liked the 3rd the best. And i agree the advertising sucked. As did the creepy artsy film divider scenes.

So, after the doctor says he doesn't know why the kid ain't eating but it's apparently not ill, they don't like, contact someone professional? A psychologist who may have specialized in treating eating disorders? And they don't consider force feeding or putting their little buggers on a nutrient drip either, to maybe prevent them from starving?

tbh the Birthday Party could’ve worked if
    1. it didn’t try to be funny
    2. it established that the woman was very mentally ill. Like she has had violent episodes and/or hallucinations in the past and suspects she murdered her husband. She doesn’t want anybody to know bc she’s afraid she did it and blacked out, plus she is terribly paranoid. Most importantly, just establish that this woman is full-on CRAZY if u want the audience to just go along with her stupid irrational decisions
